How We Started
I have always believed that chore charts for kids are a fabulous idea but I learnt very quickly that it’s not just as simple as writing a list and expecting the kids to do everything on it! I know, because that is what I did...and it didn’t work.
But I was persistent never-the-less. I wasn’t going to give up on the idea that the kids could get involved with doing things around the house. And it wasn’t going to be because I nagged them to death! When my youngest son (about 4 at the time) made the comment that he couldn't do his chores because he couldn't read yet I had a brainwave. I drew a picture of each of his chores so that he could recognise what it was he needed to do. (He thought this was really cool!)
The range of illustrations just grew from there as he took on new tasks. When friends and family then started requesting copies I new I had a really great thing that ALL parents could benefit from, and to be honest, we haven’t looked back. My boys are now 12 and 10 years old and we still use them religiously.
Along the way though, we discovered that they could also be used for developing other skills. We have used them to help learn colour, letter and word recognition and responsibility and ownership to mention just a few.
But most importantly, the simplicity and colour of our Chore Charts For Kids really appeal to the most important people here; the kids themselves. They love the fact that these chores are theirs to do and theirs alone. It is this motivation that will have kids of a very young age actually wanting to do their bit to help out. As an example, my nephew at age four was so excited to have his Chore Chart that he was waking up early in the morning and jumping out of bed just to get them done. And when asked what
clothes he need to get out for the next day (one of his chores) he went racing to his Chore Chart to see exactly what was in the picture, only to be concerned that he didn't have blue shoes. Ok...so they’re not supposed to be taken quite so literally, but that’s a great example of just how motivating they are.
So have a look. I can guarantee you’ll just love them. You can personalise them completely. Your children can pick their own colours. You can choose whatever chores that suit your house and your life style. You can add to them as children grow or pets are introduced to the household. Being laminated they will last forever, and as they are not magnetic they’re not just restricted to the fridge but can be placed on any wall in the house. And the thing I love most about them as a parent, is that from anywhere in the room, I can see who’s turn it is to do what chore. I don’t have to walk over to the list and read what is written, I can just glance over at the wall and I can tell instantly who I need to ask to put the rubbish out or empty the dishwasher.
So get going. Stop thinking about it. You won’t regret it and you won’t look back. It only gets easier from here - for you and your kids.
